I n 2007 the Comox Valley
was designated as a cultural capital of Canada in recognition of
its many special activities that promote the arts and culture in
community life.
The Comox Valley comprises the municipalities of Courtenay,
Comox, Cumberland and the outlying areas of Fanny Bay, the Oyster
River, Royston, Union Bay, Merville, Black Creek, Mount Washington
and Hornby & Denman Islands.
The name Comox comes from the First Nation word komuckway which
was shortened by the early European visitors to k'omoks and then
eventually to Comox. The name means a a celebration of
creative abundance. It is no wonder the Comox Valley is
known as the "Land of Plenty" |
